Imprinted concrete restoration in Pontefract

Pontefract is a market town with a castle, a racecourse and a liquorice tradition, but the area covered here is wider than the town. It takes in Castleford at the meeting of the Aire and the Calder, mining town Featherstone and canal-side Knottingley, and each has its own housing and its own idea of what a front drive is. This page is as much about how the work gets done in places like that as what the weather does.

Four towns, four kinds of drive

Pontefract itself has a historic centre of Georgian and older frontages, with later private and council estates spreading beyond. Castleford is a larger, flatter town of terraces and big postwar estates, with newer homes at Glasshoughton. Featherstone is a former mining community with long, regular streets of terraced and semi-detached housing, and Knottingley sits low beside the River Aire and the navigation, with a mix of older terraces and later estates.

The imprinted concrete in all four is mostly on the later housing, laid when it was fashionable to replace tarmac or gravel with something patterned. Tight streets, narrow gateways

The practical difficulty in a historic market town is access. Older streets around the centre of Pontefract have narrow frontages, parked cars on both sides and sometimes no vehicle access at all. That affects how a job is set up: how equipment reaches the drive, where run-off goes, and how we keep spray and sealer off cars, windows and neighbours.

So the assessment here is about logistics as well as the surface. We would sooner see the access, ask about water and agree where vehicles will be, than discover a problem halfway through. Sealing in particular has to be done on a completely dry surface, and a tight frontage with no room to keep traffic off it needs its curing time planned in. Rivers, canals and a damp valley floor

Castleford and Knottingley are river towns, built beside the Aire and the Calder and the navigations that follow them. Low ground beside water is damp ground. Drives there stay wet longer after rain, are slower to dry before sealing, and green over sooner, particularly where a hedge, wall or house shades them from the morning sun.

The higher ground in Pontefract itself, and out toward Darrington and Carleton, sits higher and more open, so drives there tend to dry more quickly. Fading, staining and what we find

Across the whole area the commonest complaint is the same: a drive that has gone pale and patchy. Sealer fails, the surface looks chalky, and then moss, leaf stains and oil appear on top. The first question is always whether the colour is still there. Splash water on a dull patch. If the colour returns it is intact and cleaning and resealing will restore it, and if it stays pale then recolouring is the answer. What resealing costs explains what pushes the price either way.
