Bradford is a big place, and it is built on hills. The city centre sits in a bowl, and the streets climb out of it in every direction, a lot of them lined with the dark local stone of the Victorian wool boom. The terraces are tall, tight and close to the pavement, and the villas that went up on the higher ground have their own plots, steps and retaining walls.

The outer ring, where the drives are

The outer ring is different. Beyond the old core there are big post-war estates and later development on the ridges, with the wider, flatter plots that go with them. Imprinted concrete is mostly found here, on the semis and detached houses that were built with a drive in mind.

City grime on a small drive

A city drive gets a different kind of dirt from a village one. Traffic is heavier, roads are busier, and a fine film of exhaust soot and brake dust settles on frontages near main routes, the Wakefield Road, the Halifax Road and the routes in and out of Odsal among them. It is an oily, grey layer that is easy to miss until you see a clean patch beside it.

That film does two things. It makes the surface look dull, and it gives moss and algae something to hold on to. A drive that is only a short way from a busy road can look old long before its colour has actually gone. In that case it is the grime and not the concrete that is the problem, and a proper clean will often bring back more than the owner expected.

On a small city drive there is also less room for error. A narrow surface with a wall on one side and a neighbour's wall on the other shows every mark, and the dark stripes where the wheels run stand out at once. why imprinted concrete fades explains how to tell wear from fading.

Getting to the drive: access in a built-up street

Access is often the practical question in a built-up area. Many Bradford streets are narrow, steep and lined with cars, and a drive may be reached across a dropped kerb with only a short run-up. We plan for that: we ask you to move vehicles, we protect walls, doors and neighbours' boundaries from spray, and we only seal once the surface has fully dried, because a coating over trapped damp turns cloudy.

Gradient plays a part as well. A steep drive that falls towards the road will carry water, silt and leaf litter down onto the pavement, and the foot of the drive is where we usually find the worst wear. The sealer we use can have an anti-slip additive mixed in for a surface like that, which is the sensible choice on a wet slope. slippery imprinted concrete covers it in more detail.

The southern and eastern side of the city

We work on the southern and eastern side of the city, the part that sits within our West Yorkshire coverage, and that includes areas such as Wibsey, Low Moor, Wyke, Odsal, Tong, Idle and Eccleshill. If you are on the far side of the city, it is worth a call to ask.

The work itself is the same as anywhere else: a thorough cleaning, a growth treatment where it is needed, then a reseal, or recolouring where the pigment has gone. imprinted concrete or block paving is a useful read if you are not sure which surface you have. Bradford drive questions

Will traffic grime come off an imprinted concrete drive?
Largely, yes. A proper clean lifts the soot and brake dust that settles beside a busy road, and a fresh seal makes it easier to keep clean afterwards. It often makes a bigger difference than people expect.
My street is narrow and cars park both sides. Is that a problem?
It is something to plan for, not a barrier. We agree access with you beforehand, protect neighbouring walls and boundaries, and only seal once the surface is fully dry.
Which parts of Bradford do you cover?
We cover the southern and eastern side of the city, including Wibsey, Low Moor, Wyke, Odsal, Tong, Idle and Eccleshill. If you are somewhere else in the city, ask us.
