Imprinted concrete cleaning and resealing in Batley
Restoring imprinted concrete drives across WF17 and Birstall, on the steep valley sides where the water leaves the drive in a hurry.

From the old mill streets near the river, the town rises in steps towards Staincliffe, Hanging Heaton and the edge of Birstall, and almost every street has a noticeable fall. Walk it and you will find more drives that are steep than drives that are level, which is not something you can say of most places we work.
A town built up the hillside
The housing climbs with it. Dense stone terraces sit lower down, larger Victorian villas take the better ground higher up, and the inter-war semis that spread out across Hanging Heaton and Staincliffe tend to sit on plots that have been cut into the slope. Imprinted concrete in Batley is mostly found on those semis and on later infill.
Gradient is the story of a Batley drive
A steep drive is, in one way, a gift. Rain does not sit, the surface dries quickly, and the usual enemy of a sealed surface, standing water, is not the problem it can be elsewhere. The cost is that everything moves downhill. Soil, grit, leaf litter and the grease from tyres end up gathered at the foot of the drive, and in the channel where the surface meets the pavement.
That is where we usually find the worst of it. The bottom third of a sloping drive takes the run-off from the rest, plus the road water coming the other way when it rains hard. The sealer there is the first to wear and the first to grow green. If you have only noticed a dark patch at the end of the drive, it is worth looking at the whole line above it, because the cause is usually further up.
Steep drives also put more load on the wheel tracks. A car braking or pulling away on a gradient scuffs the surface harder than on the flat, and the polish that results can make a wet slope slick underfoot. slippery imprinted concrete covers what can be done about that without ruining the finish.
Shoddy, mills and the stone that stayed dark
Batley's wealth came from rags. The town was the centre of the shoddy trade, turning old woollen cloth into new, and the mills that did it left a stone-built town that darkened in the smoke. A lot of the stone is still black. That grime has little to do with a concrete drive directly, but it does set the tone of the place: a town of dark walls and hard weather, where a bright, clean frontage stands out.
Birstall, Healey and the roads off the Bradford Road have newer houses on the old fields, with open frontages, and these are where the cleaner, flatter drives are found. Mature trees in the villa gardens higher up drop leaves and sap on whatever is beneath, which is another reason for drives in those streets to green over early.
The ends of the drive tell you most
The head and the foot of a sloping drive each tell a story. At the top, by the garage or the front door, we look for cracking and for places where the surface has moved. At the foot, we look for lifting sealer, dark growth and any sign that water is running under the edge of the slab rather than across it. Frost makes the second worse, because water that gets in at the edge freezes and opens the gap a little more each winter. cracks in imprinted concrete explains when that is cosmetic and when it is not.
For most Batley drives the answer is a thorough clean, a growth treatment, and a fresh coat of sealer. Where the foot of the drive has taken a battering we may suggest recolouring to even out the colour. Our cleaning and sealing pages describe each stage, and why imprinted concrete fades is worth a read if you are unsure what you are looking at. Assessments are free.

Batley drive questions
- My drive is quite steep. Is it safe to have it sealed?
- Yes, but it needs thought. The sealer we use can have an anti-slip additive mixed in, which keeps a wet slope from becoming slick. We will look at the gradient and tell you what we would put on it.
- Why is it only the bottom of the drive that has gone green?
- Because everything runs downhill. Water, soil and leaf litter collect at the foot of a sloping drive, and the growth follows. Clearing the foot of the drive alone does not fix it for long, so we treat the whole length.
- Do you cover Birstall and Hanging Heaton?
- Yes. We cover Batley and WF17 with Birstall, Staincliffe, Hanging Heaton, Healey, Carlinghow and Soothill included.
