Ossett is a small market town that sits on a ridge between Wakefield and Dewsbury. It is older than the estates that now surround it, and it still feels like a place with a centre, with stone terraces, Victorian shopfronts and a proper market place. Beyond that, the town thins into inter-war semis and then the larger estates of the second half of the twentieth century.

A market town of every era

The result is a town of mixed ages, and a driveway in Ossett could have been laid at almost any point in the last forty years. That is the first thing we want to know when we are asked to look at one.

Why the age of the drive matters here

Imprinted concrete was a very popular way of doing a drive from the 1990s onwards, and plenty of Ossett frontages have had one for a long time. The age of a drive tells you a lot about what has happened to it. An older drive may have been sealed more than once, possibly with different products, and layers of old sealer change what a new coat will bond to. A newer drive has usually had less done to it, but may never have been sealed at all.

That is why we look before we say. If the surface carries an old, failing coat, it has to be removed or at least keyed properly before anything goes on top of it. If it was never sealed, the cleaning is easier but the surface is more porous, and it will take up more sealer. Neither is a problem, but they are different jobs, and a quote that treats them the same is guessing.

Our guide to how often to reseal imprinted concrete explains how long a sealer is expected to last, and why the honest answer depends on the product and on how much traffic the drive takes.

Open to the weather, and what it does to a surface

Ossett sits high. The market place stands on rising ground and the streets run off it in several directions, which means the town gets more of the wind and the rain from the west than the villages down in the valley. Drives on the exposed edges are hit by wind-driven rain and take more sun than the sheltered ones further down.

On a surface like that, you are more likely to see sealer thinning from UV and weather than growth from damp. The colour fades first, then the gloss, and the surface gets dry and a little rough to the touch. It is a gradual process, which is why many owners do not notice it until a neighbour's drive has been done and theirs suddenly looks tired by comparison.

Matching a repair to the original

Over the years many Ossett drives have been patched, extended or had a section relaid. Colours drift. A patch laid in one year will not match the surface beside it in another, and pale sealer over an older repair can make the joins more obvious, not less.

That is where recolouring earns its place. It lets us bring a mixed surface back to a single, even colour rather than trying to match each patch. Where the surface is consistent and only the sealer is tired, a clean and reseal under our restoration and protection work is the right answer. what resealing costs explains what moves the price either way. Ossett drive questions

How do I know if my drive has been sealed before?
Water is the quick test. On a sealed surface it beads or sits in drops, and on an unsealed one it soaks in and darkens the concrete. Patchy results usually mean an old coat that has worn unevenly, which we need to deal with before resealing.
Can you make an old patched drive look uniform?
Often, yes. Recolouring evens out a mixed surface, and a reseal over the top locks it in. We will tell you honestly if the patches are too different to hide.
Do you cover Gawthorpe and Southdale as well as Ossett centre?
Yes. We cover Ossett and the WF5 postcode, including Gawthorpe, Healey, Southdale, Flushdyke and Ossett Green.
